Ethereum (ETH)

The settlement layer with the deepest developer base — and the messiest value-accrual story in its own ecosystem.

Ethereum has the strongest fundamentals in crypto by most measures that matter: developers, applications, stablecoin settlement and institutional integration. The complication is structural rather than competitive — its own rollups now capture activity that used to pay mainnet fees, so usage growth and fee capture have partly decoupled.

Bull case

  • The largest smart-contract developer ecosystem, which compounds: tooling, audits and talent all concentrate where the builders already are.
  • Settles the majority of stablecoin value, giving it the closest thing to genuine payment-rail utility in the sector.
  • Staking yield gives holders a native return that does not depend on selling to a later buyer.
  • Fee burn means the supply schedule tightens precisely when the network is busiest.

Bear case

  • Rollups cannibalise the mainnet fee market they were built to relieve — activity can grow strongly while ETH captures much less of it than in prior cycles.
  • Post-blob economics materially reduced L2 payments to the base layer, weakening the "ultrasound money" burn argument.
  • Staking is concentrated in a small number of large operators and liquid-staking protocols, which is a real governance and correlated-slashing risk.
  • Competing L1s are genuinely faster and cheaper for the retail-facing use cases that generate the most visible activity.

Verdict

Strong fundamentals, genuinely muddier value accrual than the narrative admits. The investment case rests on Ethereum remaining the settlement layer whose security everything else rents — which is defensible, but is a different and weaker claim than capturing all the activity it enables.
